On July 28th, 1967, the British-Jamaican music company Island Records introduced a new label to highlight the work of Arthur 'Duke' Reid, a leading producer of the Ska and Rock Steady eras. This new label, named 'Trojan' after Reid's early nickname in the music industry, unfortunately did not live up to expectations and closed within a few months. This might have been the end of the Trojan story, but the launch of a new Jamaican music company in the summer of 1968 revived the name.

A merger between Island Records and its distributor B&C led to the creation of 'Trojan Records.' This new entity quickly embarked on an ambitious project, releasing singles across various labels that showcased music from prominent producers. These included British-based artists like Robert 'Dandy' Thompson and renowned Jamaican producers such as Lee 'Scratch' Perry, Edward 'Bunny' Lee, and Duke Reid himself.
